I bought these so I could swab some items for a mold growing project. Each swab is sterile and they each individually come covered and protected in a tightly sealed plastic wrapping. I'm a nurse

So I know the importance of sterile products for treating wounds. I use these for a wound on my dogs paw. There are a lot of these, which are lasting me quite a while. They are perfect and easy to use. Open them from the stick end, pull them out, and do not touch the swab portion until you touch it to the wound you are trying to treat, with an ointment or whatnot. If you touch the swab tip it will no longer be sterile. For humans consider using hibiclens first, for dogs I use a diluted chlorhexidine solution from my vet.
